A short history of Alghero


Alghero town’s is situated on the north-west coast of Sardinia. With 80 Km of coastline (6 of them are close to our b&b, only 5 minutes walking). Alghero is the capital of “Coral coast” in fact the surrounding sea is full of this precious product, and the town is one of the most known and visited. In the surrounding of Alghero there are a lot of interesting spot archeological and naturalistic; first of all the historical town centre dates back the first half of the 11th century. Now some backgrounds of Alghero: after the genoese family of Doria fortified a fishing village the Catalan-Aragonese arrived in Alghero and the king repopulated the village with Catalan only. The village grow up very quickly,and became a precious spot  for the Aragonese  becoming part of the Catalan kingdom, and remain such for four century. Nowadays Alghero preserve the characteristics of the Catalan-Aragonese reign, wich can be noted in the architecture of the churchs, buildings and fortifications and also in the Catalan language wich is still spoken. On the road that connect Alghero with “Capo Caccia” promontory you can visit the “Nuraghe Palmavera”dates back in the Neolitic and going on you will find the Marine protect area of “Porto Conte”, on the same road you will arrive in one of the most famous natural spot: “Grotte di Nettuno”, you can visit them from the promontory through 700 steps on the wonderful “Escala del Cabirol” with an unforgettable panorama or by boat leaving from Alghero arbour.
